Assistive Equipment Program:

Visitors to the Independent Living Centre are able to see and trial a wide range of equipment that can assist with some tasks at home, school, work or in the community. Advice and assistance is available from one of the ILC’s health professionals which include Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech Pathologists and an Education Technology specialist. The Equipment Display provides thousands of actual equipment items for trial in simulated settings. With advice from ILC’s health professionals, an informed choice about assistive equipment can be made.

Country Services:


The Mobile Information and Display Unit travels state wide to extend the services of the Perth based Independent Living Centre to people in rural and remote communities. The Independent Living Centre also uses Videoconferencing technology with video cameras and microphones to transmit images and sound between two or more locations to reach remote locations. This allows for real-time exchange of information and communication between two or more sites.

ILC Hire Service:

ILC Hire is an equipment hire service that specialises in reasonably priced short-term hire of equipment for people with disabilities throughout the State.
It aims:

  • to provide an opportunity to trial equipment before purchase
  • to ensure that the users and carers needs are met, and that the equipment suits the environments in which it will be used
  • to assist people whose rapidly changing needs make equipment purchase impractical
  • to meet short term needs such as post surgery
  • to allow people access to equipment whilst their own equipment is being repaired or delivered

ILC Tech Service:

The Technology Service provides information, advice and training on specialised computer and communication equipment for people of all ages. There is a wide range of adaptive technology, software, hardware, communication devices and environmental control systems on display.
Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists can assist people with the following areas:

  • Alternative methods of accessing their computer
  • Specialised educational, language and literacy software
  • Environmental controls
  • Augmentative and alternative communication options

Education & Training:

The Independent Living Centre of WA (Inc) offers training sessions to people working in the health, community care, disability, government and private sectors. Training programmes have an emphasis on practical skills and can be customised to suit the specific needs of an individual or group. Modules can be undertaken either at the ILC premises or the client’s own location.
The Training Service includes:

  • Manual Handling Training
  • Standard workshop programme
  • Customised workshop programme
  • Training needs analysis
  • Videoconferencing

ILC Disability Equipment Grants

The Independent Living Centre of WA administers the ILC Disability Equipment Grants program. Grants are available to eligible West Australian’s with permanent disabilities to assist with the purchase of specific items of equipment they would not otherwise be able to afford. The program is income assessed and provides grants towards vehicle modifications, air conditioners and assistive technology for people with vision impairment or communication impairment. The program also provides assessment funding and support, e.g. occupational therapy driver assessments. Not for Profit Organisations or Local Government Authorities can apply on  behalf of individuals with disabilities as grant funding cannot be provided directly to individuals.   

ILC Driver Assessment Service

The Independent Living Centre of WA offers an Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment Service to find out a person's fitness to drive or the impact of a person's disability on commencing or returning to driving. Assessments are conducted by a Driver Trained Occupational Therapist and include a vision assessment, clinical off road assessment and practical on road driving trial. The driving trial is generally done together with a driving instructor experienced in rehabilitation. The service includes:

  • ILC Fee for Service (FFS) Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment and
  • ILC Disability Equipment Grant (DEG) Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment

ILC Multicultural Aged Care Service (MACS):


Independent Living Centre, Multicultural Aged Care Service is an information service designed to educate, support and partner aged care providers and people from cultural diverse communities to meet the diverse needs of older people.
ILC MACS provides the following information, education and research to:

  • Promote access to, and choices of residential and community aged care services for frail older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Assist aged care providers plan and establish best practice in the delivery of culturally appropriate services.
  • Deliver Cultural Diversity Training, resources and support to aged care service providers.
  • Foster partnerships between government, aged care industry, health professionals and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

ILC Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre:

Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centres are an Australian Government initiative aimed at providing information, support and referral to community and respite services for older people, people with disabilities, people receiving palliative care, people with a mental illness and their carers. The Independent Living Centre WA (ILC) is the provider of the North Metropolitan Respite and Carelink Centre. The service is split into two separate areas:

  • Carelink provides assistance to the general public seeking information, support and referral to the relevant aged, disability, mental health and general community care services.
  • Respite which provides support to carers by linking them to carer support services and accessing respite care. Respite care is aimed at providing carers with a break from their caring role and support in continuing their caring role.
