Policy and Strategy
The correct application of assistive technology can greatly improve the independence and quality of life for people with a disability or chronic disease. It’s no longer just the 20% of people who currently identify with having a disability who need support. A recent Australian study shows that on average, people can expect to live with a disability for almost 20 years.
The strategic goals of ILCA are to:
- Increase the awareness of assistive technology in the community
- Influence public policy about assistive technology
The ILCA addresses barriers to the correct application of assistive technology by advising government and policy makers of the:
- Lack of national policy and strategy
- Lack of uniformity between states regarding funding schemes and eligibility
- Lack of consumer pressure
- Scepticism towards “technology” in client base
- Lack of systems to encourage and support good prescription and maintenance practice
