FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Kitchen layout and the space the refrigerator is to fit in to. This includes the direction of the door opening (left or right hinged) and therefore the compatibility with the individuals needs (e.g. access to bench space from the fridge opening).

Capacity (usually given in cubic litres).

Ease of opening the door; design of handle (a vertically oriented, open handle is easier to grasp than horizontal or recessed handles); also the position of the handle. Consider the quality of the door seal and the refrigerators insulation capability.

Refrigerator interior: Ease of access into the fridge interior and visibility of contents of drawers and baskets. Note if there is an interior light (and ease of changing the light). Consider ease of access to storage space on door shelves (continuous shelving usually easier to access). Adjustability of shelves and baskets (slides may be easier to manage than brackets). Ease of cleaning the interior, especially shelving.

Access to controls and ease of use (clarity of lettering).

Noise level.

Energy efficiency / rating.

Ease of installation.

Length and conditions of warranty.

Selecting A System
Store heavy or frequently used items at the most accessible height.

Options
A range of different options may be available, dependant on the model of refrigerator chosen. These may include:

Self assist close.
Manual defrost, push button defrost, cyclic defrost, frost free.
Accessories - ice moulds, ice bin, freezer scraper, egg tray, water jug, butter dish, meat keeper.
Fast freeze option.
Chiller: on frost free models a section in the top of the refrigerator is colder than the rest and can be used for storage of meat or quick chilling of food or drink.
Rollers on base for easy moving of fridge.
