Short Description
Vehicle hoists are available to lift a person from a wheelchair to a passenger or driver seat. These are either externally or internally mounted and are available in two types of operation: - manual hydraulic, i.e. uses a lever pump handle to operate; or electric hydraulic, i.e. uses a push button control box.

MANUAL HYDRAULIC HOISTS consist of:
- An external mounting frame resembling a roof rack which attaches to the gutter on the vehicle roof (vehicle is modified for new models without gutters)
- Spring loaded lifting arm which extends from within the roof rack space
- Detachable hydraulic jack with lever handle
- One piece sling with chains
- Spreader bar with hooks onto which the sling attaches.

ELECTRIC HYDRAULIC HOISTS consist of:
- Usually an internal mounting
- A hydraulic boom
- A spreader bar onto which the sling is attached
- An extension bar
- A box with up / down controls which runs on 12V power from the electrical system of the vehicle
- Controls may be user or attendant operated

POINTS TO CONSIDER:
- Possibility of using the unit without assistance (this includes fitting the sling, operating the vertical and horizontal movements, dismantling and storage of any of the components prior to travel)
- Sling options (range of styles and sizes) available
- Ease of cleaning the sling
- Ease of positioning the person in the sling
- Position the hoist places the person over the seat
- Whether the hoist places the person in the driver, passenger or rear seats
- Amount of manual handling required by the assistant
- Ease of assembling and dismantling the unit
- Ease of storage in the car
- Consider the amount of door clearance and access available into the vehicle : is a hoist suitable?
- Modifications required on the car and the extra cost involved
- Warranty and service.


Licence & Insurance Requirements
In Western Australia, Transport's Vehicle Examiners, (Licensing Division) must approve modifications to vehicles, including installation of hoists. Providing the modifications meet all requirements, a modification permit will be issued and the cost of the permit may be waived for passengers or drivers with disabilities.
To ensure Insurance cover, the vehicle owner should advise their Insurance company of the approved vehicle modifications.
