Power Assist System

Short Description
A battery powered drive unit that can be permanently retro fitted to the Jewel MPS tilt in space manual wheelchair to convert it to an attendant controlled powered chair to assist the attendant with long distance travelling or over slopes and rough terrain. Alternatively, it can be ordered as a new chair with the conversion kit already installed.
The drive unit is attached to the rolling base frame of the Jewel MPS. A single 12 volt battery is fitted on top of the single wheel drive unit. The attendant control is mounted onto the push handle and attached to the drive unit by a flexible cord.

More Details
The conversion unit comprises a high torque 12 volt DC drive motor and gearbox with a single solid rubber high grip drive wheel that manually lowers to the ground and drives the wheelchair. The unit is permanently bolted to the frame of the wheelchair near the rear axle. The manual tilt in space function can be used to raise and lower the drive wheel to the ground.
The unit is installed by the supplier or agent only.
The Jewel MPS does not fold for transportation, therefore the drive unit does not need to be removed for transportation.


Features

Battery: One 12 volt 17A/hrs sealed gel cell battery.

Battery Charger: 12 volt 2.2 Amp automatic battery charger.

Controller: Attendant operated control box is mounted to the rear attendant push handle.

Controller Features: Fully variable speed knob, push button drive switch, on/off switch, on/off LED indicator light.

Safety: The wheelchair can be fitted with optional attendant brakes on the rear wheels is available as an option. Anti-tip wheels are also available as an option.

Method Of Use
To raise the drive wheel off the ground when no longer required:
Generally, the drive wheel will stay on the ground, but may be lifted for example, when maneuvering the chair in confined spaces (in a taxi).
With the chair in the fully tilted back position, the strap which is attached to the top of the drive unit can be clipped around the push handle. When the chair is tilted back into the upright position it lifts the drive unit off the ground. The strap stays attached when not in use. Tilt in space function can continue to be used.
To lower the drive unit to the ground for use:
The strap that is attached to the top of the drive unit is also clipped onto the attendant push handle. Tilt the chair into the fully tilted back position, lowering the drive wheel to the ground.

Licence & Insurance Requirements
A licence is not required for a rider in an exempt motor chair (powered wheelchair) which is limited to a maximum speed of 10km/h. The rider is considered a pedestrian and road rules apply as for pedestrians.
