Factors to Consider
Points to consider when selecting a Slip Resistant Floor Application or Coating
Slip resistant floor surfaces may be tested to meet Australian Standards AS/NZS 3661.1-1993 or AS/NZS 4586-2004. Check details with suppliers. This is a good means of establishing the effectiveness of a slip resistant surface.
Method of application. Some products may be applied as a Do It Yourself kit while others must be professionally applied.
Maintenance. Consider the equipment, solutions and physical effort required for cleaning.
Life span of product. Product may require replacement or reapplication after a period of time.
Appearance. Will the application or coating alter the appearance of the floor?
Environmental demands. Such as wet or dry conditions. Consider durability under heavy traffic areas.
Finished texture. In bathrooms consider the comfort and care of bare feet.
Compatibility of surfaces. Is the slip resistant application or coating compatible with the current floor surface.

Types of Slip Resistant Floor Applications and Coatings
Floor Etching is a chemical process that forms microscopic grooves and indentations on new or existing ceramic, porcelain or terracotta tile, brick, terrazzo, bluestone, granite and porcelain or enamel baths. This process should not alter the appearance of the surface and is suitable for use in wet areas. Some etching processes may be self applied but most require professional installation. The floor surface may lose its slip resistance if the recommended cleaning regime is not adhered to. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Slip Resistant Paint can suitable for use on metal, timber, fibreglass or concrete surfaces such as fibreglass baths, boats, wooden stairs, metal platforms, external ramps and steps. It can be professionally or self applied.
Pebble Mix can be applied to concrete surfaces such as driveways and pool surrounds. Can be professionally or self applied.
Slip Resistant Tape can be applied to stairways, ramps, walkways, kitchens and other heavy traffic areas. Some tapes can be bent to conform to various shapes. Available in a range of thicknesses and colours.
Vinyl Flooring Segments - Segments of slip resistant flooring can be adhered to tiled, concrete or metal floors that are subject to spillage and heavy foot traffic. Available in a range of shapes, grades and colours. A fine or extra fine grade vinyl is required for use in barefoot areas such as bathrooms.
Safety Panels - consist of fine or coarse ceramic grit particles embedded in a matrix of polymer resin that are adhered to an existing floor surface. Designed for use on small areas such as ramps, workstations or pathways. Must be professionally applied.
Recycled Rubber Pavers - a porous rubber surface that can be applied in the form of pavers to wooden, concrete, or metal surfaces. Suitable for use indoors and outdoors and must be professionally installed. Can also be applied using a wet pour method.

Safety and Maintenance
Refer to the manufacturer or supplier manual for maintenance, safety details and warnings.

Standards
AS/NZ 3661.1-1993 Slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces
AS/NZS 4586-2004 Slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials
Specific Australian Standard(s) or other Standard(s) may be applicable for materials, manufacturing processes or installation of some types of equipment. Compliance with relevant Standards is indicated by written certification that a product has been tested and assessed as compliant with specific Standards. Purchasers are advised to check with the supplier or manufacturer of this item as to its compliance with relevant Standard (s).

Short Description
There are a number of applications and coatings designed to increase the slip resistance of an existing floor surface, particularly under wet conditions. Selection of the most appropriate option may be based on the type of floor surface, the volume and type of traffic, the maintenance required, and the appearance of the surface after application.
