Factors to Consider
Each level must have the same key configuration and messages need to be re-recorded onto the device if the key configuration is changed. This requires appropriate preparation time from an organisation wishing to use one device with a range of clients.
High levels of visual acuity and attention are required for scanning users to attend to the small LED's.
Speech can be recorded in any language to suit people from a non English speaking background.

Short Description
The Talara is an electronic communication device which uses digitised (human recorded) speech output. A number of different keyboard layouts can be selected, including 2,4,8,16 and 32 keys. messages can be stored on four different levels. Keys can be accessed directly or by using switch and scanning.

The standard keyboard layout has 32 cells
Alternative layouts (2, 4 horizontal, 4 vertical, 8 and 16 keys) can be programmed
There are no dead spaces with enlarged keyboard layouts, the entire keyboard can be active
There are optional keyguards available for all keyboard layouts

Left to right and right to left scanning set ups are available for all modes

Symbol Supports
Any symbol system, such as COMPIC, PCS or photos can be used on the overlays to represent the underlying message
Interchanged overlays can be created for the Talara using Mayer Johnson Boardmaker software
