SHORT DESCRIPTION
Ferrules are the rubber tips that fit onto the base of walking sticks and walking frames to offer increased stability. They are available in various shapes, sizes and textures to suit a variety of needs. Ferrules can also be used on other equipment, such as shower chairs, to help prevent them slipping.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR USE
Diameter of ferrule base - ferrules with a smaller diameter are more likely to slip on surfaces, such as ice. A ferrule with a wider diameter is less likely to damage surfaces such as bowling greens or lawns.
Consider the aperture required to fit the walking stick or frame.
Thickness of ferrule base - consider wear over time. Ferrules with thinner bases will require replacement after a shorter period of time.
Type of ground surface - if walking over uneven terrain, a ferrule that can pivot and swivel may increase the contact between the ground surface and the walking aid.
Colour - available in a variety of colours. Darker colours may mark some flooring.
Ferrule height - adding a ferrule to a walking aid will increase the items overall height. Consider this in relation to the persons height.
Material on base of ferrule - consider slip resistant properties and durability over time. When using a walking frame with two front wheels, a smooth ferrule surface will offer less friction and be easier to push along the ground. When used in this way ferrules offer more stability than glides when the frame is pushed down.
If ferrules are wearing out frequently over a short period of time consider trialogue heavy duty ferrules which incorporate a metal insert.
