Short Description
Manually operated adjustable beds can be adjusted in any or all of the following: height; backrest angle; knee break angle; tilt. These features are adjusted by mechanical means such as by winding a handle. It is important to consider a person's ability to manage these mechanical adjustments and to trial a range of beds prior to selection.

Price Guide
Refer to supplier details for pricing.

More Details
Type of Adjustment:
Backrest angle - supports an occupant in a more upright lying / sitting position. May
assist a user transferring in and out of bed by raising their upper body.
Knee break - provides support under the knees to help prevent a person slide down the bed when sitting in a more upright position. Supporting legs in a raised position may also assist a user who has lower back pain. Consider the position of the hinge in relation to the person's body.
Trendelenburg tilt - raises the head of the bed higher than the foot.
Height adjustment - alters the overall height of the bed. This may assist carers attending to an occupant in bed by raising the bed to a suitable working height and may also assist a user transferring on and off the bed.
Amount of adjustment - the degree to which each bed adjusts in angle and / or height varies. It is important to ensure that the amount of adjustment meets the needs of the client and / or carer(s).

Method of Adjustment:
Winding handles may be used to adjust the bed height, tilt, backrest and the knee break. These handles may fold away when not in use.
A gas spring mechanism may assist by taking the weight of the bed and / or occupant during adjustment.
After lifting the backrest, knee break or Trendelenburg tilt, to the desired angle a ratchet system may be used to hold it in place.
Finger levers - may be used to unlock the position of the backrest or knee break.
Grip handles - may assist adjustment.
Hydraulic pump mechanism - may be used to raise and lower the bed height. Controls may be a hand or foot lever.

Size of Bed:
Single bed size is standard but other sizes may be available - three-quarter
(king single), double, queen, king.

Type of Mattress
Materials - inner spring, latex, water filled, or foam.
Firmness of mattress - consider comfort and a user's ability to transfer off the bed as a softer mattress will be more difficult to push off from.
Pressure care - is a specialised mattress or overlay required?
Mattress cover - waterproof, fire retardancy, chemical treatment.

Type of Base / Frame:
Base - may be slatted or sprung. Additional slats may be used to increase base length if required.
Frame - may be metal, wood. Rubber buffers can be placed on each corner to minimise damage to walls.
Fold down, or removable, panels at foot and head of bed may assist with such tasks as changing bed linen.
Movement of bed - lockable castors vary in size and will alter the overall bed height.
Weight capacity of bed
Access under bed - does the bed frame or mechanics impede access for a mobile hoist if required?
Folding frame - may assist storage or transport of bed.

Accessories:
Safety rails - attached to frame or held in place under mattress
Self help pole
I.V. pole
Bed stick
Bed cradle
Bed rope ladder
Oxygen bottle holder
Over bed table
Battery back-up
Massage unit
