Bump Gates

Short Description
A fully mechanical system designed to allow a farm style gate to be opened from inside a vehicle. Bump Gates can also be activated while on horseback, on a motorbike or on foot.

More Details
To open a Bump Gate, gently bump the rubber-sleeved bump rail at less than walking pace and this releases a spring-activated lock pin. When the gate swings open, it strikes a delay catch mounted on a post at 120 degrees from the gate in the closed position. It is held by the delay catch while you are driving through. After a few seconds the delay catch releases the gate and the gate closes behind you. You do not need to bump the gate very hard, as it is the spring which provides the momentum for the gate to open.
It is ideal if the Bump Gate can swing 110 - 120 degrees from the hinge post in both directions, especially if towing trailers etc. The greater angle allows more delay time for the gate to close.
If your Hinge post is on a fence line, you may need to put in a short section of fencing (1 -2m) to bring the hinge post off the fence so the Bump Gate can swing 120 degrees.

To vary the gate closing speed, adjust the speed screw in the hinge post so your gate takes around 15 seconds from closing. This allows light trucks or vehicles towing trailers sufficient time to drive through.
To hold the gate open, swing the delay hook over the short 90 degree tail to latch the gate open.

It is essential that the gate can swing open safely in both directions. The gate might need to be recessed for this to be possible, for example, near a busy road. If the gateway is on a steep slope, you will need to do earthwork's to level the ground 6m (20") either side of the gate to allow the Bump Gate to swing in both directions. An alternative is to move the gate to more level ground if possible.

Installation
The product is designed as Do-it-Yourself Kit. The Fitting Instructions included in the kits are written in plain English and with photos of each step, so that anyone with handy person skills can do the job themselves. It takes two people 4 to 5 hours to complete the installation, including the concreting in the Hinge and Delay Catch posts. If you are too busy, a reputable fencing contractor will have the skills and tools to install the kits for you.
The kit is designed for use with a standard Weldmesh or multi bar gate that has a 25mm nominal bore galvanised steel pipe frame. The Bump Gate can also be fitted to double gates providing one gate is wide enough for the vehicles you are driving through the gate most of the time (3m or 10' minimum).
