To Be Made Fishing Aid For One Handed Use

ILC Reference NO 71:42:003
Item sourced from ILC TAS database

1. Fishing Aid

Short Description
Consists of a box with a socket in the front to take the rod. The box serves as a seat and also to store equipment. The hinge is designed so that the rod can be "struck" when a fish bites. It moves upwards from an angle of 45 degrees. This hinge additionally allows the socket to be folded flat during transit.

Price Guide
Refer to supplier details for pricing.

Method of Use
A pin inserted through the rod handle slots into an aperture in order to prevent the rod from twisting in the socket when the line is being reeled in. To fit the rod into the socket, the rubber end must be removed from the handle, the rod is removed from the socket for casting.

With patience, the rod can be set up by the user but a little help may be needed initially. Wherever possible, the rod should be left set up from day to day. The reel (essentially of the fixed spool type) is fixed on top of the rod for a right handed and underneath for a left handed fisherman.

A cork glued to the top of the box on the user's unaffected side. Serves to stabilise the hook while the bait is attached. Bait and tackle should be kept in containers which can be opened with one hand. Eg: wide-topped, screw-top jars.

The user may need to practice casting on dry land. Especially if he/she is using own non-dominant hand. He will have to learn to control the line, reel the rod with one hand and to use the socket to take the weight of the rod (and fish) whilst turning the reel. The bale arm and lock have to be manipulated with a free finger.

To play and land a fish is not unduly different from the way a two handed fisherman would land his catch. It may however, be a little difficult to maintain a taut line throughout the operation. Once the fish is near the bank, the rod can be left in the socket with the reel locked and the hand used to manoeuvre a landing net.
