Kurzweil 1000

Short Description
Kurzweil 1000 is an IBM computer-based reading tool that converts the printed word into speech for people who are blind or visually impaired. The system combines OCR (optional character recognition) technology with synthesised speech to read aloud printed documents such as type-set books, letters, spreadsheets. Kurzweil 1000 requires printed documents to be scanned into the system software where recognition and speech output is produced. Text being read can also be displayed upon a monitor and visually tracked with a highlight option. User control is enabled via the number pad on an existing standard keyboard or on a separate 17-key keypad. Kurzweil 1000 is available as software only or as a complete computer system (Omni 1000 Edition) with or without monitor.
