More Details
FACTORS TO CONSIDER:
Diameter of rail (32mm is usually recommended for a comfortable and functional grip).
There must be a clear distance between the inner side of the rail's handgrip and the wall, to allow for finger clearance and forearm support (50-60mm is appropriate).
The need for a heavier rail (38mm) or heavier wall fixing if the rail is used frequently and/or by a heavy person.
Whether a safety grip (slip-resistant finish) is needed on the rail.
Method of fixing the rail is appropriate.

SELECTING A SYSTEM:
Rails should be selected and located to suit the individual needs of the user - this includes careful consideration of rail diameter and distance from the wall.
Rails must be able to support the weight/stress placed on them by the user(s).
Rails should only be fixed to sound masonry or timber structural supports - attachment to these should be by corrosion resistant patent anchors or wood screws.

Options
Wall or floor mounted swing-away grab-rails (lock in a position at right angles to the wall, but can be swung away to the side).
Fold-away/lift-away rails (fixed wall-mounted grab-rails which fold down to horizontal position for use).
Modular units which allow for 'customised' configurations.
Clamp on rails for baths.
Rails combining horizontal and vertical supports.

Slip-resistant surface - used on stainless steel and/or epoxy coated rails.
Epoxy coating - powder coated gloss finish available in a range of colours.
Concealed fixing.
Hand-held shower adjustable along rail which can double as a grab rail.
