Bump Gate in use

Short Description
A fully mechanical system designed to allow a farm style gate to be opened from inside a vehicle. The system can also be activated while on horseback, on a motorbike or on foot.

Caution
The Bump Gate is not recommended for large trucks or heavy vehicles. Use the delay catch to hook the Bump Gate open for these vehicles.

More Details
To open a Bump Gate, gently bump the rubber-sleeved bump rail arm at a speed less than walking pace (approx 2kph). This releases a spring-activated lock pin. A firm bump is not required, as the spring provides momentum for the gate to open. When the gate swings open, it strikes a delay catch mounted on a post at 120º from the gate in the closed position. It is held by the delay catch while the vehicle is driving through. The delay catch then releases the gate and the gate closes behind the vehicle. When closed, the Bump Gate is held securely in a two-way lock.
The rubber sleeve on the rail arm spins around.
Ideally it is best if the Bump Gate can swing 110 - 120° from the hinge post in both directions, especially if towing trailers etc. The greater angle allows more delay time for the gate to close. If the hinge post is on a fence line, it may be necessary to install a short section of fencing (approximately 1 - 2 metres) to bring the hinge post off the fence so the Bump Gate can swing 1120 - 120°.
To vary the gate closing speed, adjust the speed screw in the hinge post. This allows light trucks or vehicles towing trailers sufficient time to drive through.
To hold the gate open, swing the delay hook over and use the short 90º tail to latch the gate open.
It is essential that the gate can swing open safely in both directions. The gate may need to be recessed for this to be possible, for example, near a busy road. If the gateway is on steep slope, level the ground 6 metres either side to allow the Bump Gate to swing in both directions. An alternative is to move the gate site to more level ground if possible.
The Bump Gate has a number of features to ensure that cattle do not open open the gate.
To decrease bump sensitivity :
1. Threading the cable through the centre holes of the cable bracket.
2. Recess the lock pin at least 25mm (1") in the two-way lock.
3. Have some slack in the cable when the Bump Gate is closed.

The kit is designed for use with a standard weldmesh or multi-bar gate that has a 25mm nominal bore galvanized steel pipe frame. The Bump Gate can also be fitted to double gates providing one gate is wide enough for the vehicles driving through the gate (3 metres minimum).
