The keypad of the device has rubber keys marked with white letters. The device has direct access only. There are 9 different voice options to choose from.
The device features abbreviation/expansion capabilities. There is also a word prediction, which replaces an unknown word with the word it most resembles. This helps correct spelling or typing errors. It is possible to change the key sensitivity so that it ignores a second hit of a key if it happens immediately after the first hit.
It features an internal rechargable battery.
Options
Options available on all models include:
- Speech Type, combines a visual output communication aid with a voice output communication aid.
- Keyboard Layout, either a QWERTY (standard) layout or an ABC layout is available.
- Display Type, Backlit or Vacuum fluorescent display is available.
- A wrist strap.
- A Key Guard, available in standard or thick styles.
- Attaching a printer to the device.

The LightWRITER SL56:
This device has two keyboards and screens. One faces the user and the other faces the person with whom the user is communicating.
The LightWRITER SL85:
This device has scanning access, and supports 1 and 2 switch scanning. Also has access for mouse, keypad or joystick. Does not include the standard LightWRITER keyboard.
The LightWRITER SL86:
This device combines a scanning and a keyboard communication aid.
