Short Description
A 22 minute video that was developed to be used as part of an education program for people with rheumatoid arthritis. An Occupational Therapist illustrates various ways joint protection techniques can be employed in real-life situations in and around the home. Two clients illustrate various ways that joint protection techniques can be used to complete daily activities to minimise damage and stress on joints, and reduce pain. The purpose of the video is to create awareness that there are different ways of performing everyday tasks which can make life easier and help both men and women cope with their conditions.

CONTENTS: The video shows two people in their homes using the techniques that have been described to them by an Occupational Therapist. The first situation illustrated is preparing morning tea for a friend whilst the second situation looks at garden maintenance and repairs.

A woman client demonstrates various techniques at home, by role playing a typical day that includes a visitor coming for morning tea. Some of the techniques and equipment ideas include: using a list of daily activities to achieve balance of work and rest, and to eliminate unnecessary activities; appropriate storage of kitchen items; use of appliances; using two hands for some activities; the use of a trolley to carry items around the home; and ensuring seating is at the correct height.

A male client demonstrates some yard tasks and ideas for accessing the community by role playing maintaining the yard, and needing to go to the hardware store. Some of the techniques and equipment ideas include: use of functional resting splints; appropriate garden tools; storage and organisation on tools; and safe car transfers.
