Short Description
Telstra have a Call Connect service (Ph 12456) which enables callers to be connected to a local, mobile or STD number by an operator (must be a listed number).

SERVICE: This service is a standard Telstra service and not designed specifically for people with disabilities. However it may enable some people with disabilities who are not presently able to access the telephone network to make calls. Telstra is offering a service fee exemption to eligible customers in order to meet the needs of customers with severe physical disabilities who are unable to use a standard telephone or dial a number without extreme difficulty. Customers who receive an exemption simply pay normal call costs (Flexiplans, Spot Specials, etc., also apply).

APPLICATION: Can be made by phoning the Telstra Disability Enquiry Hotline requesting a Disability Exemption form.

ELIGIBILITY: Those who may be eligible to receive the exemption are people with quadriplegia, severe motor neurone disease or another impairment, or combination of impairments, which render them incapable of using a standard phone. People with a visual impairment are NOT eligible to receive an exception. These customers will need to provide Telstra with written certification from an Occupational Therapist, Rehabilitation Engineer, or Specialist Physician in Rehabilitation.

Clients must also be a Telstra customer to recieve the exemption.

COMMENTS: Only one discount plan per household is allowed. For example, if the client is eligible for an excemption to call connect they would not receive any other discounts which they may or may not have been already receiving (like reduced costs on large numbers of phone calls).


Features
By dialling 12456, a customer can be connected directly to another party within Australia at a charge of 40 cents, plus 4 cents per second while in contact with the operator, plus normal call charges, for each successfully connnected call. The Call Connect number can be pre programmed into the phone for one touch dialling. Some clients may be eligible to apply for an exception to the connection fee. If eligible they will still have to pay for the normal charge of the call to the other party but will get the connection fee rate free.
