More Details
COMMENTS: A microphone is used to detect the sound, or a signal can be wired directly to the transmitter unit [eg telephone or door bell can be wired directly].

The transmitter unit then activates the pager or flashing light. The person is alerted to the event by either -
1. A vibrating pager, worn on the body within a range of 200 - 250 metres of the event signal. The event signal activates the vibration which continues at a set frequency until it is switched off by the user. The pager is a standard size and can be clipped to the belt or worn in a pocket. It requires a 9 volt battery.

2. One or more flashing lights. Up to four lamps can be plugged into the transmitter unit, or the system can be wired to the ceiling lights that are fixtures in the building [electrician required]. The lights flash in the same rhythm as the event, thus the person is able to detect the difference between, for example, the telephone ringing and the door bell.

New functions [event detectors] can be added after initial purchase of the system, but this is far more costly than initially setting the system up for the maximum numbers of functions.

Vibrating pager is only capable of one frequency of vibration and cannot therefore distinguish between different events.

Large metal objects may interfere with the radio transmission of the signal which activates the pager, reducing the effective range in which the pager can be worn.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: The State Government will offer up to financial assistance for the purchase of smoke alarms that send out strobe lighting and/or link to a vibration pad which can shake enough to wake a person from their sleep. Rebates of up to $400 on purchases of specialised smoke alarms per household are available. Purchases from 20 December 2007 will be eligible for the rebate. The scheme does not subsidise the cost of 'hard-wiring' devices.
Eligibility criteria:
· Proof of purchase
· Permanent resident
· Signed confirmation from GP or hearing practitioner that level of hearing loss may prevent them from hearing a standard smoke alarm
· Have (or be the dependent of a holder of) a Centrelink allowance, concession card, DVA Gold Repatriation Health Card or White Repatriation Health
