Short Description
This bed occupancy alarm combines a system of up to three infrared sensors positioned around the bed to alert a carer when the occupant in the bed begins a sideways movement to get out of the bed. The monitor is clamped onto the bed head. It works in conjunction with a nurse call system. A remote alarm or pager with room and bed display are optional.

More Details
The audible alarm is activated when an object (arm, leg or torso) passes through the infrared beam. Generally there is no delay period (ie the alarm sounds as soon as the beam is broken). However the system can be set with a customisable delay period for clients who tend to move around a lot in bed without actually getting out of bed.
The alarm ceases when a cancel button is activated, either through the nurse call system or on the remote alarm or pager. The beam is the same length as the bed, and cannot be activated by a person walking past the end of the bed. This alarm will not sound if the occupant reaches upward or stands up on the bed.
In a situation where the bed is placed next to a wall (as is usually the case in nursing homes) you will only need one Invisa-Beam to monitor the edge. In a situation where the bed is freestanding in middle of a room, that is, allowing the patient to exit either side of the bed, you will need two monitors, one each side of the bed-head to monitor both edges. The beam itself is invisible and the monitor is operated by electricity. Setting or adjusting the length of the beam is undertaken prior to installation.
To enable a bed with the monitors attached, to be moved from ward to ward and through doorways, the monitors can be folded away in front of the bed head.
The alarm is mains powered. It does not have a battery backup. The wireless remote alarm and pager are both battery powered.

Installation
To install, the monitor(s) is mounted to the bed head and plugged into a power socket. The sensor beams are then appropriately aligned to ensure they capture the required territory.
For institutional use, as in a hospital or nursing home, an alarm is then connected to the existing nurse call system meaning that when the beam is interrupted, an alarm immediately sounds at the nurse’s station. For home use, the system comes with a wireless alarm unit which rings when the beam is tripped.
