More Details
COMMENTS: REGISTRATION
The users of all powered wheelchairs and scooters are required to register their mobility device with the Department of Transport. (Refer to section 7 concession code X from the Department of Transport). This is to ensure:
1. The vehicle is not capable of travelling more than 10 kilometres per hour
2. A record of these types of vehicles can be maintained.

Registration requires:
1. A photocopy of a current medical certificate certifying that a powered wheelchair is necessary for the applicant`s mobility.
2. A completed application form available from Queensland Transport - Form number 1274.
3. Lodgement of the form and certificate at the nearest Queensland Transport office. (No fees are incurred - exempt from plate fee, CTP and stamp duty).
4. Presentation of the wheelchair/scooter for inspection to confirm that it is actually an "invalid" wheelchair. Can be done at local offices and by appointment is recommended. Some features that the inspection officer may look for are clearance lights or reflectors and possibly a rear view mirror. However lighting and indicator requirements are not mandatory. Lamp/lighting must not be greater than five watts.
5. The wheelchair/scooter should be used on footways if they are available. If this is unsuitable the road may be utilized remaining as close as possible to the left side of the carriage way.

POINTS TO CONSIDER: INSURANCE
Other types of insurance that can be obtained include "property", and "theft". (Contact individual insurance companies for more details).

LICENCING
The licencing section of the Department of Transport will NOT issue a "drivers licence" for a person to drive a powered wheelchair or scooter. Traffic regulations for people in wheelchairs and scooters are the same as for pedestrians.
