Short Description
A range of four spinner knobs to assist drivers with steering. Custom made to suit individual hand sizes.

More Details
PEOPLE USEFUL FOR: * Those who have reduced strength or range of movement in their upper limbs
* People who use hand controls in place of foot controls
* People who have use of only one hand to steer.

GUIDELINES: SPINNER KNOB - Queensland Department of Transport Guidelines.
The fitting of a steering wheel spinner knob and/or modification of light, signal or horn switches etc., do not require specific approval or inspection by this department. The following guidelines are advised to persons wishing to do these modifications.
* All components should be robust and properly secured.
* All controls must be simple to operate and free from obstruction.
* No components or fitting should be hazardous or cause annoyance to the driver.
* The surface finish of any component should not produce glare in the driver`s field of view.
* The vehicle must be returned to original manufacturer`s specification prior to resale/disposal.
NOTE: However, after consultation with an Occupational Therapist specialising in driver assessment and rehabilitation in 6/99 the ILC-Qld was advised that it may be seen as an illegal modification to a vehicle (as the spinner knob protrudes from the wheel and could be hazardess in the event of an accident) unless accompanied by an appropriate medical certificate.

Models
Models: Four models are available:
* Spinner Knob: Useful for driver who has use of only one upper limb for steering the vehicle.
* 'C' Spinner Knob: Useful for people with quadriplegia who have a functional wrist and a slightly functional grip.
* Quad Fork Spinner Knob: Used by people with quadriplegia who have partial functional use of the wrist and some use of the extensor muscles of the hand. The hand is inserted into the opening at the top of the device and is held in a vertical position. Plastic coated.
* TR-Pin Spinner Knob: Used by people with quadriplegia who have no tensor hand muscle function. The hand and wrist are stabilised and the device prevents the hand slipping out of the device. The hand is still free to lift up off the handle.

Licence & Insurance Requirements
Queensland Transport must approve modifications to vehicles. Providing the modifications meet all requirements, a modification certificate and compliance plate will be issued and the cost of the permit may be waived for drivers with disabilities.

Drivers of the modified vehicles must have their Driver's Licence endorsed with a conditional code stating the necessary vehicle modification needed by the driver with a disability. In order for the licence to be endorsed, the applicant must bring a letter of medical clearance from a medical practitioner.

It is recommended that people considering use of an alternative driving control undergo assessment with a driver trained occupational therapist. For relevant contact details please contact LifeTec Queensland or Occupational Therapy Association of Queensland.

To ensure Insurance cover, the vehicle owner should advise their Insurance company of the approved vehicle modifications, and the endorsed Driver's Licence where the modifications are for the driver with a disability.
