INSTALLATION: Place the two metal rims around steering wheel, put on the plastic casing and tighten the two bolts so the rims tighten and hold the casing in place. The knob is positioned by pushing the shaft through the hole in the casing closest to the driver. When through the button at the back of the shaft needs to be pressed while pushing the knob further through to lock it into place. Reverse procedure to remove.

PEOPLE USEFUL FOR: Useful for one handed steering, or for those with decreased hand strength.

GUIDELINES: SPINNER KNOB - Queensland Department of Transport Guidelines.
The fitting of a steering wheel spinner knob and/or modification of light, signal or horn switches etc., do not require specific approval or inspection by this department. The following guidelines are advised to persons wishing to do these modifications.
* All components should be robust and properly secured.
* All controls must be simple to operate and free from obstruction.
* No components or fitting should be hazardous or cause annoyance to the driver.
* The surface finish of any component should not produce glare in the driver`s field of view.
* The vehicle must be returned to original manufacturer`s specification prior to resale/disposal.
NOTE: However, after consultation with an Occupational Therapist specialising in driver assessment and rehabilitation in 6/99 the ILC-Qld was advised that it may be seen as an illegal modification to a vehicle (as the spinner knob protrudes from the wheel and could be hazardess in the event of an accident) unless accompanied by an appropriate medical certificate.

COMMENTS: The mounting block consists of two durable, flexible nylon parts with an internal aluminium sleeve, two free running ball races and two concealed worm drive clamps for attachment to the steering wheel.

Quick release button allows the spinner knob to be removed for other drivers who may not require it.

Licence & Insurance Requirements
Queensland Transport must approve modifications to vehicles. Providing the modifications meet all requirements, a modification certificate and compliance plate will be issued and the cost of the permit may be waived for drivers with disabilities.

Drivers of the modified vehicles must have their Driver's Licence endorsed with a conditional code stating the necessary vehicle modification needed by the driver with a disability. In order for the licence to be endorsed, the applicant must bring a letter of medical clearance from a medical practitioner.

It is recommended that people considering use of an alternative driving control undergo assessment with a driver trained occupational therapist. For relevant contact details please contact LifeTec Queensland or Occupational Therapy Association of Queensland.

To ensure Insurance cover, the vehicle owner should advise their Insurance company of the approved vehicle modifications, and the endorsed Driver's Licence where the modifications are for the driver with a disability.
