Alber E-Motion Powered Assistance for Manual Wheelchairs

ILC Reference NO 43:40:008
Item sourced from ILC QLD database

Alber E-Motion Wheelchair

Short Description
Quick release manual wheels with integrated electric motors and batteries in the hubs to provide powered assistance to a propelled manual wheelchair. As the user begins to propel, the motors engage. Small on-board computers determine the amount and duration of assistance. The computer programme attempts to provide a feeling of smooth rolling across a flat surface, regardless of the terrain.

More Details
CONTROLS: On each hub there are controls for the driving sensitivity, the level of power assistance, and battery indicator.

BATTERIES: 24 volt, NiCd, leak proof and maintenance free. Recharging time is approximately two and a half hours when batteries are fully discharged.

BRAKES: A light manual braking action on the pushrim will activate the power braking mechanism to slow the chair down safely. Self braking automatic when chair reaches moderate speed.

ADJUSTMENT: The sensitivity of the motors can be individually adjusted to compensate for the difference in strength between left and right arm. The amount of exertion required to propel the chair can be adjusted.

Two levels of power assistance are available. Level 1 is suitable for indoors, or on flat surfaces. Level 2 is suitable for outdoors, or going up kerbs or longer slopes. A button on each hub toggles between level 1 and level 2 assistance.

Ten driving programmes can be preprogrammed to suit individual needs.

METHOD OF USE: Remove the standard rear wheels of the wheelchair, and place the e-motion driving wheels into the wheelchair axle using the quick release catch. The batteries fit into the centre of each wheel hub, and can be removed if necessary, for transport, or when dismantling the chair. To initiate the e-motion mechanism, the user begins to self propel. Once the chair is no longer stationary, the e-motion augments the movement of the wheels. The user must keep propelling in order to continue to use the mechanism. Once the chair is stopped, the e-motion will cease.

APPLICATION: Fits most manual wheelchairs. Normal rear wheels are exchanged for e-motion driving wheels.
