Factors To Consider
The switch users needs and skills should be considered in relation to the various features offered by a software program when choosing an appropriate title. Features to consider include;
- Function offered i.e. cause - effect only (where one switch activation results in music / animation onscreen), simple or complex scanning (automatic or step in a variety of patterns such as linear, circular or row/column) or a developmental progression of all. Some programs offer direct access options also.
- Activity theme i.e. is onscreen activity task (such as drawing, reading / literacy, numeracy, etc) and/or topic area (such colours, nursery rhymes, game, etc) focussed. Is the activity suited to the age and interests of the user?
- Customisation possible i.e. can you set parameters for the user such as activity detail (colour, animation, activity choices), switch access parameters (number of switch activations required for success, number of scan items presented, speed of scan, pattern of scan, auditory and/or visual scan) or other access options supported (one switch, two switch, mouse / trackball, touchscreen, alternative keyboard). The ability to customise the access parameters of software will enhance the success experienced by the user.
- Switch interface i.e. is the software supplied with it's own switch interface or do you need to provide one (switch adapted mouse or other commercial switch interface) to connect the users switch?
Also consider what computer system and operating system the software supports, whether that system uses floppy disks or CD-ROM formats and whether or not a single licence will suffice for your anticipated use (a single user licensed copy will allow you to load and use the program on one computer at a time only).
