. AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS AS 3856.1 APPROVED:
- Ask the supplier for a copy of the Australian Standards Certificate.
If you buy a lift without standards approval you may find your
insurance company will not cover you in the event of an accident.
. LOOK FOR SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS:
- Safety flap to stop wheelchair rolling off edge of platform.
- Manual back up system in the event of power failure.
- Hydraulic limit switches at top and bottom of lift ride.
- Pressure sensitive over ride circuit that stops the platform folding
when loaded.
- Handrails.
- Slip resistant platform.
. EXTERNAL, INTERNAL OR UNDERBODY INSTALLATION:
- Internal use more floor space but can be operated inside the van.
- Underbody hoists can only be fitted to front wheel drive vehicles or
buses with high ground clearance - leave exit freely accessible.
. REAR OR SIDE LOADING:
- Layout of the vehicle - ease of positioning wheelchair, ease of exit in emergency.
- Location mainly used e.g. is the driveway wide enough for side loading, is there sufficient room to load from the rear or side in car parks commonly used.
. SIZE OF HOIST:
- Amount of floor space it takes up.
- Height of hoist and door clearance.
. SPLIT OR ONE PIECE PLATFORM:
- Split platform allows use of the doorway (more important with side
installation).
. WEIGHT OF UNIT:
- If you have a small van you may need to add some extra springs to the suspension.
. OPERATING NOISE:
- Some children can be prone to fitting at sudden movements or loud noises.
. WARRANTY:
- Some manufacturers offer 90 days warranty while others offer up to 5 years.
. REPUTATION:
- Ask suppliers for a list of people who own their equipment and talk to these people.
. INSTALLATION:
- An approved automotive engineer should install the hoist and can supply an engineering certificate.
- Notify your insurance company of any modifications to the vehicle.
WIDTH: Overall width should be no less than 760mm preferably 780mm
DOUBLE TRACKS: Should be attached securely to one another
SURFACE: Should have slip resistant finish with no protrusions more than 6mm above the surface
EDGE BARRIERS: Shall be provided but maintaining width of 760mm between the barrier
GRADIENT: Should be no steeper than 1 in 4 when in use
STABILITY: There should be a means of attaching the ramp to the vehicle to secure it against displacement or disengagement when in use.
NOTE: An approved wheelchair and occupant restraint system must be installed if a person is transported positioned in a wheelchair.
