Short Description
Vehicle hoists are available to lift a person from a wheelchair to a
passenger or driver seat. These are either externally or internally mounted and are available in two types of operation: - manual hydraulic, ie. uses a lever pump handle to operate or electric hydraulic, ie. uses a push button control box.

MANUAL HYDRAULIC HOISTS consist of:
. An external mounting frame resembling a roof rack which attaches to gutter on the vehicle roof (or modified for new models without gutters)
. Spring loaded lifting arm which extends from within the roof rack space
. Detachable hydraulic jack with lever handle
. One piece sling with chains
. Spreader bar hooks onto which the sling attaches
ELECTRIC HYDRAULIC HOISTS consist of:
. Usually an internal mounting
. A hydraulic boom
. A spreader bar onto which the sling is attached
. An extension bar
. A box with up/down controls which runs on 12v power from the electric system of the vehicle
POINTS TO CONSIDER:
. Possibility of using the unit without assistance
. Ease of positioning the person in the sling
. Position the hoist places the person over the seat
. Amount of manual handling required by the assistant
. Ease of assembling and dismantling the unit
. Ease of storage in the car
. Modifications required on the car and the extra cost involved
