Short Description
Second hand scooters and wheelchairs are available for purchase
directly from selected suppliers. Often they have been refurbished and carry a short term warranty. Alternatively, they can be purchased privately. The ILC keeps a list of people wishing to sell second hand scooters and wheelchairs and there are a number of organisations and publications that also have such details.

. Buying a second hand wheelchair can be a good way of saving money on the initial outlay.
. As with buying a new wheelchair, it is advisable to seek the advice of a therapist and several chairs should be tried out before purchase.
. The cost of maintenance, replacement batteries for powered chairs, and insurance must be included in the calculations.
. It is essential to make sure that there are suitable repair and service
and facilities for the particular model.
. Any second hand chair should be checked very closely and tried out
thoroughly before buying, to ensure that it is suitable for all of the
individual's requirements.
. Make sure that the frame is not damaged, that no removable parts are missing, and that all the mechanisms function well.
. For powered chairs, check the battery condition (look for corrosion, whether it is filled, ask whether it has been kept charged).
. Ask for the original supplier's instructions and any paperwork or guarantee.
