Short Description
Many people can sit quite adequately in a standard chair, but need additional support for a specific part of the body in order to feel more comfortable. The most common supports are back or neck (cervical)cushions. Some products offer support to both areas.

. Most supports can be used in a variety of seating such as an armchair, car seat or an office chair.
. Some supports come with an elasticised / adjustable strap for attaching to the chair. These assist the support to remain in situ and may allow for height adjustment.
. Where possible, trial a back support before purchasing
. Consider what degree of adjustment and support is needed and whether a removable cover would be useful.
. It may be advisable to consult a physiotherapist or occupational therapist as to what is most appropriate to meet the person's needs.
. If someone is experiencing back pain it is advisable to consult a doctor or physiotherapist in the first instance.


Models
BACK SUPPORTS
The following types are available:
. Non adjustable back supports - most are fibre, foam or mesh and may come with a fabric cover. They are generally contoured to conform to the body shape. The user should be sure that the backrest provides enough support in the curve of the lower back, as there is no facility for adjustment.
. Back support with seat - these are similar in construction to those above, but have an attached, shaped seat
. Adjustable back supports - come with
1) an adjustable strapping system which enables the degree of support to be customised
2) an adjustable mechanism with a control wheel. The mechanism is encased in the upholstery. By turning the wheel (at the side) the degree of lumbar support can be adjusted.
. Inflatable back supports - these can be inflated by means of a small hand pump and positioned to provide comfort and support.
. Modular back supports - these have a firm, contoured backrest with an adjustable height pad which can be moved up and down to alter the position of support to the most comfortable place for the user.
. Full or half lumbar rolls - provide support in the lumbar region

NECK SUPPORTS
These may be a cylindrical roll or contoured to accommodate the shape of the neck
