More Details
MATTRESS OVERLAYS may consist of:
. ALTERNATING AIR FILLED mattresses connected to an air pump which inflates & deflates the mattress cells sequentially to stimulate circulation and relieve pressure build-up over bony prominences.
. STATIC AIR-FILLED mattress overlays without an air pump but constructed with an air flow pattern which allows for a change of pressure with any body movement and which prevent "bottoming out" when correctly inflated.
. FIBRE FILLED mattress overlays contain a hollow core silicone coated synthetic fibre which maintains its resilience and permits air flow through the overlay. They are stitched in channels and covered with washable fabric. Some suppliers offer an extra moisture-proof cover.
. WATER mattresses designed to be placed on top of existing mattresses consist of one, two or three water filled cushions contained in an outer frame which may be foam or air filled. The water cushions may contain foam baffles or may be unstable.
. FOAM overlays with a dimpled (egg carton) profile are designed to provide comfort and minimal pressure relief. The convolutions promote air circulation. The effectiveness of foam reduces over time and needs regular replacement, however some qualities of foam have a longer life and provide better support.
. GEL flotation pads filled with a viscoelastic material.
ANTI PRESSURE MATTRESSES:
. Replace the existing mattress and are generally made to suit a hospital (single) bed frame.
They may be constructed from:
. Foam of varying densities and configurations.
. Combinations of foam and gel or water.
. Water mattress with a thermostatically controlled heater.
. Air filled mattress with circulating pump.
