Alternating Air Overlay

Short Description
An air filled, alternating air pressure overlay made from heavy duty plastic with a water resistant cover. It features a sensor pad that automatically adjusts the system to provide optimum pressures. The manufacturer states that the system is suitable for users between 45 to 203 kg with a high risk of pressure ulcer development, or with existing ulcers up to and including grade 3.

More Details
This system consists of a portable pump unit connected to a sensor pad that is underneath the bacteriostatic, plastic overlay. The sensor pad automatically adjusts the air pressure output of the pump to suit the user's weight and position.

STRUCTURE
The mattress features individual cylindrical air chambers that span the full width of the mattress. The chambers press stud into place and are separate from the base of the overlay and each other so that they can be removed for cleaning and replaced if punctured.

The pump supplies air to each alternate chamber resulting in a ten minute cycle of alternative inflation and deflation. The three air chambers at the head end remain at a constant pressure to minimise the sensation of movement for the user.

The overlay has a micro air loss system to allow air to circulate around the user.

PUMP
has an on / off switch and an automatically operated pressure control. A light and audible alarm indicates low pressure.

PUMP / MATTRESS CONNECTORS
have a "snap lock" mechanism to minimise accidental disconnection.

COVER
is a Dartex cover which is vapour permeable, water resistant and features two way stretch.

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
The overlay may be sponged down. Infection control guidelines are available. The pumps can be repaired. If an air chamber is punctured the whole air chamber can be removed and a replacement chamber press studded into place.

EMERGENCY RELEASE
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is possible without having to remove the overlay from the bed. A pull ring release deflates the mattress in under 10 seconds to enable resuscitation procedures to be performed.

Models
Model AU-1000 - pump
Model AU-1020 - mattress overlay

Factors To Consider
All pressure reduction products must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the product material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion or mattress. Where bottoming out occurs even with correct use (eg correct inflation levels), a different product may need to be considered.

Specific inflation levels are critical (see manufacturer's instructions).

Standards
Some assistive technology needs to meet Australian or other standards. Standards may relate to materials, manufacturing and installation. Products that meet Australian or international standards will have written certification. To find out if a product meets Australian Standards ask the supplier to show you the certificate.
