Bump Gates

Short Description
A fully mechanical system designed to allow a farm style gate to be opened from inside a vehicle. Bump Gates can also be activated while on horseback, on a motorbike or on foot.

More Details
The kit is designed for use with a standard Weldmesh or multi bar gate that has a 25mm nominal bore galvanised steel pipe frame. The Bump Gate can also be fitted to double gates providing one gate is wide enough for the vehicles you are driving through the gate most of the time (3m or 10' minimum).

OPERATION
To open- gently bump the rubber-sleeved bump rail arm at less than walking pace to release a spring-activated lock pin. The opening gate strikes a delay catch mounted on a post at 120º from the gate in the closed position. This catch holds the gate open while the user is driving through. The gate is released by the delay catch after a few seconds and then swings closed.

The gate does not need to be bumped very hard as the spring provides the momentum for the gate to open.

CLOSING SPEED
The speed screw in the hinge post is adjusted to vary the gate closing speed so that it takes around 15 seconds from opening to closing. This allows light trucks or vehicles towing trailers sufficient time to drive through.

To hold the gate open, the delay hook is swung over and the short 90º tail used to latch the gate open.

GATE POSITION
It is ideal if the Bump Gate can swing 110-120° from the hinge post in both directions, especially if towing trailers etc. The greater angle allows more delay time for the gate to close. If the Hinge post is on a fenceline, a short section of fencing (1-2m) may be required to bring the hinge post off the fence to allow the Bump Gate to swing 120°.

It is essential that the gate can swing open safely in both directions. The gate might need to be recessed for this to be possible, for example, near a busy road. If the gateway is on steep slope, the ground will need to be levelled 6m [20'] either side of the gate to allow the Bump Gate to swing in both directions. An alternative is to move the gate site to more level ground.
