Short Description
A well designed bathroom with fittings and fixtures selected to suit the user/s can make personal care an easier and safer task.
A wall mounted shower seat is one such option and may be considered a suitable alternative to a free-standing shower seat or stool as it offers a stable seated surface where space is limited. Some wall mounted seats fold up when not in use, providing space for other users.

More Details

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

Seat
Size of seat (width and depth) should be selected to suit the user
May consider wider seat to provide additional space
Be sure to check load capacity of the seat unit-has it been manufactured to take the user's weight?
Consider the comfort of seat - models vary in seat type-e.g. padded vinyl, plastic or nylon slats, wooden slats, clear acrylic or solid plastic.
Slatted seat provides for drainage of water whereas a solid seat may reduce stability of the user through build-up of water on the seat.
Rounded edges recommended

Seat height
Seat should be fixed at the height suited to the user and related to the type of transfer-i.e. does user slide from wheelchair to seat or will they independently transfer from standing position?
Once fixed to the wall the seat height of most units cannot be adjusted
AS 1428.1 recommends 470-480 mm above floor level.
Height may also be determined by type of unit-if the unit has support legs the length of the leg will influence seat height whereas a cantilever seat (without legs) can be set at the required height.

Other considerations
In most cases users of a wall mounted shower seat will also require a hand shower located within easy reach and grab rails close to the seat to assist transfer / balance.

Consider the cost of the product and the cost of installation-would a free-standing shower seat or stool be just as effective or more versatile in multi-user setting.

Warranty and guarantee provisions.

Installation
It is recommended that installation of wall mounted shower seats be undertaken by a qualified tradesperson as the method of fixing the seat to the wall requires evidence of wall strength sufficient to take not only the seat but the weight of the person using the seat.

AS 1428.1 (see Standards heading below) requires that the seat must be able to withstand a force of 1100 N.

Standards
Some assistive technology needs to meet Australian or other standards. Standards may relate to materials, manufacturing and installation. Products that meet Australian or international standards will have written certification. To find out if a product meets Australian Standards ask the supplier to show you the certificate.
