More Details
Using a large size monitor for enhanced computer and closed circuit TV (CCTV) use can be a simple way of increasing the magnification of images or text displayed. Sizes available include 14", 15", 17", 19", 20" and 21". Measurement of screens is taken as length of diagonal (from upper corner to lower opposite corner of screen).

Some issues to consider for CCTV:
Some closed circuit TV are compatible with ordinary TV systems. Larger domestic TV units may be useful although use of 'giant' screens may make practicalities of use difficult. A choice of monocolour, or full colour can further enhance clarity and readability.

Some issues to consider for computer access:
Clarity of image on computer screens is described as resolution and is measured in pixels. Each size monitor will have a recommended resolution that allows optimum clarity and whole-of-desktop view.

Think of the tasks that you are wanting to complete on your computer. Computer professionals recommend a 14" monitor only for basic use (word processing, email, some web surfing) with 15" models
generally becoming standard issue today for computer users without visual difficulties. 17" to 21" monitors are recommended for low vision users or those who work predominantly at a computer screen ( a 21" monitor allows 2 documents to be open side-by-side simultaneously).

Also be aware of the vertical refresh rate - the standard today being 72Hz. The refresh rate of a computer screen aims to maintain the quality of image (clarity, sharpness of line) over time and should happen at such a speed that it is not able to be noticed by the naked eye. Slower rates will result in a 'flickering' quality on screen. Be aware, some larger screens can have more obvious 'flickering'.

Ask computer suppliers for details of the range of brands available, for prices and to try out the options.
