POINTS TO CONSIDER:
RECORDING THE MESSAGE:
. Messages can be recorded in a number of ways:
- Single cassette, single tape used for both outgoing and incoming message, The disadvantage of this system is that after the caller hears the outgoing message they have to wait until the tape fast-forwards over other existing messages before they can leave theirs.
- Dual cassette, the outgoing message is stored on one tape and incoming on another. Eliminates time spent waiting for tape to fast-forward but tend to be more expensive.
- Digital outgoing message and cassette incoming.
- Fully digital, both the outgoing message and the incoming message are digitally recorded, so there's no tape mechanism to break down and no fast forwarding past existing messages. However limited time is available for incoming mesages.
DATE/TIME STAMP:
. The time of the day and day of the week are recorded after each message.
These machines can also be used as a talking clock, they will announce the time of day when a button is pressed.
REMOTE FAST-FORWARD/ REWIND:
. Some machines allow you to phone in to listen to messages remotely. It can be useful to be able to fastforward or rewind through the messages.
GENERAL POINTS:
. Look for machines with well spaced controls and clear labelling. If the buttons have more than one function make sure they are labelled as such.
. Retrieving messages and resetting the machine to take new ones should be easy to do with the press of one button not several.
. Look for a model with basic instructions listed on the machine itself.
