Short Description
Emergency call systems are used to contact help in an emergency if the user can't get to the telephone. Non-monitored, telephone based emergency call systems consist of a portable transmitter and a receiver unit attached to or included in the telephone. When the emergency signal is received, the alarm dialler automatically rings the people chosen to be contacted in an emergency - their numbers have been programmed into the automatic dialler.

More Details
if the telephone is answered, the recipients of the call will hear a pre-recorded message giving details of who requires assistance. They are then responsible for either providing assistance or for arranging for someone else to respond to the call.
the alarm dialler dials each number several times before the system becomes inactive.

The disadvantages of this type of system are:
the tape cannot answer questions if the recipient doesn't understand the message or doesn't know what to do.
the tape cannot take extra action if someone else answers the phone
the tape cannot take extra action if no-one is available to provide immediate assistance
if answered by an answering machine, some systems will not call other numbers

The advantage of the non-monitored system is the price - there is no monitoring service fee to pay.

The non-monitored systems differ from the monitored systems in that there is no operator involved in giving the emergency message; instead it is a taped message which is played automatically.

Components
Radio Transmitter
Usually supplied as a pendant that is worn around the neck or carried in a pocket. In an emergency you push a button on the pendant and this actions triggers an alarm message that is transmitted to the receiver unit/,alarm dialler.

Receiver Unit/Alarm Dialler
There are two types available, either a unit which is connected to the current telephone, or a new fully functioning telephone which incorporates the receiver unit/alarm dialler. Both units are mains powered via a power point, but have a back up battery in case of power failure. Once the transmitter is activated and the signal received by the unit, it automatically dials the pre-programmed phone numbers as chosen by the user.

Caution
Please note that non-monitored alarm systems cannot have an emergency service number pre-programmed into the system's dialer memory.
The ACT Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade and police advise that the information provided by a pre-recorded message service is insufficient for them to be able respond. They are however able to respond to a call from a family member, friend, neighbour or monitored service.

A monitored emergency alarm has a 'live' operator available 24 hours to respond to requests for assistance. Information on monitored alarms can be obtained from the Independent Living Centre.
