Greenspeed Recumbent Trikes

ILC Reference NO 51:61:009
Item sourced from ILC ACT database

GT3

Short Description
Greenspeed foot propelled bikes and trikes are Australian made and an alternate design to standard bikes. Their recumbent design means that they pick up speed very easily. They have light, accurate steering, greater comfort and superior brakes. They feature a semi reclined mesh seat, centrally mounted foot pedals with telescopic leg length adjustment and inclined handle bars with a hand operated brake & gear change.

Price Guide
Approx Price: from $3,000 for GT3
Price Date: 7/4/2005

More Details
FRAME: Chrome Molly 4130 tubing.
SEAT: Seat Angle - 40 or 35 degrees.
WHEELS: Araya 510 mm x 47 mm.
Spokes - Sapim stainless steel.
Tyres - Tioga "Comp Pool" 90psi slicks.
BRAKES: Twin Sachs VT 70 mm Drums.

METHODS OF USE: The individual sits on the trike in a recumbent position (sitting low to the ground with their back supported by the mesh in a semi reclined position). The trike is propelled by pedalling through the legs as per any other bike but in a "lying" position. The hands hold to vertical bars near the front wheels which are used to steer the trike, apply the brakes, and change the gears (via the thumbs).

COMMENTS:
. Leg Length Adjustment is achieved via a Telescopic boom.
. Steering: Centre point Ackerman with inclined handle bars.
. Ratio: 1.1:1.
. Standard Fittings: Rear mudguard, Rack, Safety Flag.

ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS :
+ Recumbent position supports the whole body, allows greater power through the pedals, and cuts down air resistance (less effort required compared to conventional bike).
+ very stable (which also eliminates the danger of going over the handle bars compared to conventional bikes).
- can be difficult to get on/off the trike.
- because the trike is low to the ground it may be difficult for other vehicles to see it (though it is supplied with a safety flag and no major problems have been reported by users).
