This system incorporates a 12 volt electrically operated restraint reel that can be attached to the front of the wheelchair before going into the vehicle.
By activating a switch, the belt retracts and locks as the wheelchair is being loaded. The carer can let go of the wheelchair at any stage of loading and the wheelchair will hold its position. When the ideal position in the vehicle is achieved, the operator attaches and secures the rear tension restraints. The reels can be fitted in conjunction with existing rear restraints or are available as a complete restraint kit which includes the reels, rear tension restraints and an occoupant lap sash inertia safety belt.
The Safetex system is also available as a four point static system with a lap belt or lap sash inertia occupant belt.
Licence & Insurance Requirements
In the ACT the installation of restraint systems into vehicles must be inspected by an Engineer certified by Road User Services (in NSW an RTA certified Engineer). It is advised that any proposed vehicle modifications/installations are discussed with the Technical Unit at Road User Services on 13 22 81 and the vehicle insurance company is contacted to discuss whether the alterations will affect the insurance cover.
Training must be provided by the supplier in the use of the restraint system. An instruction book must be provided as well as written instructions displayed in the vehicle into which the system has been fitted.
Standards
Some assistive technology needs to meet Australian or other standards. Standards may relate to materials, manufacturing and installation. Products that meet Australian or international standards will have written certification. To find out if a product meets Australian Standards ask the supplier to show you the certificate.
