Short Description
A forward or backward facing restraint system for wheelchair occupants. Consists of a frame mounted on a steel keyhole rail, with back and head support padding, and hard steel side braces attached to the frame. Wheelchair attachment brackets must be permanently attached to the wheelchair to enable it to be clamped onto the A-frame system.

More Details
Wheelchairs used with this system should have the following features:
a) Tubular metal frame;
b) Four wheels;
c) High back rest - preferrably with an extension to protect head and neck;
d) Batteries (where fitted) carried below seat height and adequately secured;
e) Have a chassis, capable of having the two restraint brackets fitted in accordance with fitting instructions.

Additional items required to complete the restraint system are:
1. Floor plate allowing the Treclok to be removed from the vehicle;
2. Restraint bar pack, which adapts to the wheelchair and allows it to be docked to the restraint unit includes:
2 Restraint bars
2 Support bars
1 Hardware pack
1 Lap belt

Method of Use
. a bracket is attached to both sides of the wheelchair below the armrests. The wheelchair can still be folded with brackets attached.
. to lock the wheelchair in place, a lever to the rear of the wheelchair is raised and this raises the two locking pins.
. when the lever is lowered, the pins lock down into holes in the wheelchair brackets, locking the wheelchair in place.
. if a lap/sash belt is used, it is positioned and fastened.

Caution
. bracket fixed to the frame of the wheelchair will make the wheelchair heavier.
. front of wheelchair is not restrained
. occupant restraint is attached to wheelchair not the vehicle


Licence & Insurance Requirements
In the ACT the installation of restraint systems into vehicles must be inspected by an Engineer certified by Road User Services (in NSW an RTA certified Engineer). It is advised that any proposed vehicle modifications/installations are discussed with the Technical Unit at Road User Services on 13 22 81 and the vehicle insurance company is contacted to discuss whether the alterations will affect the insurance cover.
Training must be provided by the supplier in the use of the restraint system. An instruction book must be provided as well as written instructions displayed in the vehicle into which the system has been fitted.


Standards
Some assistive technology needs to meet Australian or other standards. Standards may relate to materials, manufacturing and installation. Products that meet Australian or international standards will have written certification. To find out if a product meets Australian Standards ask the supplier to show you the certificate.
