Restraint System

Short Description
A wheelchair and lap occupant restraint system which comes complete with two front straps and two rear ratchet tensioning straps which are all colour coded for easy matching. The system adapts to most wheelchairs without modifications to the wheelchair.

More Details
. Made from 10 gauge high strength steel with slots every 50 mm apart which allows for lateral movement. The track can be bolted to the top of the van floor and the area in between the tracks filled in with plywood. This means that the tracks can be easily removed and the original mats replaced if wanting to sell the van at a later stage.

. Large snap hooks have a positive lock action on the webbing.

. Large ratchet tensioning device on rear straps allows easy grip when restraining wheelchair.

. Lap belt: is attached directly into the track in the same way as the wheelchair restraint straps. The belt then passes between the wheels of the chair and the seat. The buckle on the belt should be placed at or below the hip of the occupant.

. Harness: optional. This attaches to the lap belt and a strap passes over each shoulder, fastening to the floor tracking.

Licence and Insurance Requirements
In the ACT the installation of restraint systems into vehicles must be inspected by an Engineer certified by Road User Services (in NSW an RTA certified Engineer). It is advised that any proposed vehicle modifications/installations are discussed with the Technical Unit at Road User Services on 13 22 81 and the vehicle insurance company is contacted to discuss whether the alterations will affect the insurance cover.
Training must be provided by the supplier in the use of the restraint system. An instruction book must be provided as well as written instructions displayed in the vehicle into which the system has been fitted.
