Samson Attendant Controlled Power Conversion Kits PD4 And PD6

ILC Reference NO 43:40:005
Item sourced from ILC ACT database

PD6

Short Description
This is a compact, lightweight add-on motor system that makes it easier for an attendant to push a manual wheelchair up a slope. It also makes going down a slope safer because of its dynamic braking system. It can be installed on most manual wheelchairs without affecting normal operation. The unit consists of a control unit, battery pack, motor and wheels.

Models
PD4
. A small rear wheel with a battery and power pack.
. It does not alter the normal operation of the wheelchair.
. No tools required to attach/detach
. The drive unit and battery are placed under the wheelchair giving the attendant enough space for operating and steering.
. The uni-directional free drive wheel allows the PD4 to be used when needed without having to disengage it when not in use.
. Can be transported (together with the wheelchair) in most car boots.

PD6
. A larger unit which is steered by handlebars on a tiller set behind the wheelchair push handles.
. It has two small wheels which fit between the wheelchair rear wheels, and a battery/power pack set vertically on the tiller.
. The drive unit is attached to brackets that are fitted on to the wheelchair near the rear axles by the supplier.
. The battery pack can be removed from the tiller to make lifting into the boot easier.

Both models:
Rechargeable battery
Battery charger: automatic battery charger supplied

Method Of Use
PD4
A proportional speed control trigger clips to the wheelchair handlebar for use by the attendant. A push switch or a toggle switch is optional.
The wheelchair is steered by using the wheelchair push handles.
To dismantle, lift battery out with handle, disconnect controller links, pull up grey sleeve underneath black knob, slide out battery housing. No tools are required.
To remove bracket, undo black knob on front cross brace to loosen, lift out cross brace.
Supporting brackets are left attached to the frame of the wheelchair.

PD6
This model is steered using two push handles in a similar way to driving a powered scooter or pushing a shopping trolley. It may be easier for the attendant to operate than the PD4.
PD6 can be operated forward or backward.
Controller has on/off switch, dialled speed control, battery level indicator.
The unit is attached to or detached from this bracket by angling the dual wheels to connect with the brackets mounted under the wheelchair. The attachment and detaching are controlled by a lever placed next to the push handle.
For transportation the drive unit and batteries can be removed with quick release mechanisms, no tools are required. The brackets remain on the chair but do not interfere with the folding of the wheelchair, nor significantly add to its weight.
