Alber E-Motion Power Assistance For Wheelchairs

ILC Reference NO 43:40:001
Item sourced from ILC ACT database

Controls

Short Description
The E-Motion consists of two rear wheels which each contain a motor concealed in the wheel hub. These wheels replace the existing wheel when power is required. When the wheelchair user applies force to the push rims, the motor engages and assists to propel the wheelchair. Three levels of support are available which are activated by a push button on the wheel. This item could be useful for hilly terrain and long distances.

More Details
The E-Motion can be supplied with a wheelchair or attached to an existing wheelchair.
Controls: The batteries form the inner part of the wheel's hub. The control panel is on the exterior surface of the battery. The panel includes a battery level indicator and a push button to control the power level.
Power: Three levels of support are available:
Stage 1 is for minimum support, such as for indoor use.
Stage 2 is for outdoor use on even terrain.
Stage 3 is for maximum support such as when going up hills.
According to the manufacturer, the E-Motion can climb kerbs.
The sensitivity on the left and right wheels can be adjusted independently.
Although there is a default setting for the device, there is some flexibility in selecting a program suited to individual needs with 10 different programs to choose from.
Batteries are leakproof and maintenance free. They are NiCad batteries which means that the charge discharge cycling regime is very important so as to be able to optimise their life. There is a battery level indicator and an auditory signal sounds when the batteries need recharging.

Safety Features
The manufacturer stresses that the wheelchair must have an anti tip system, or the purchaser needs to purchase the anti tip system that attaches to the e-motion itself.

Installation
A small bracket is attached to the wheelchair frame to allow the powered wheels to be secured to the wheelchair.
The batteries and wheels are attached and removed without the need for tools.

Method Of Use
The on-off control is situated in the middle of each wheel.
The switch to select the "high-low range" is situated about midway between the centre and the outside of the wheel. Accessing that switch may be challenging when the wheel has stopped with the switch at the lower position on the wheel.
By applying slight resistance on the push rims the electrical servo brake system is activated to slow down movement, even on hills.
The amount of assistance required can be set at different levels on the left and right wheels if needed.
The push rims are set just a little further out which may make a difference to someone with a limited range of movement.
The wheelchair can be folded for transport with the E Motion in place.
The battery back can be removed from the centre of the power pack to make lifting easier.
