ILC Reference NO 41:45:025
Item sourced from ILC ACT database

Picture

Short Description
A range of belts which can be used to support a person in a chair and prevent them from sliding down onto the floor. They consist of adjustable length webbed strapping and buckles. The belt is attached around the waist or pelvis and two extension straps are secured around the back of the chair. Shoulder and leg straps are available to provide extra restraint if required for safety reasons.

Caution
The use of restraint affects a persons rights and dignity, and may remove or restrict their ability to move freely. Restraints can be an item of equipment or a management practice and should not be used as a substitute for supervision. In some cases, a restraint may increase a person's risk of physical harm.

Policies or practices of restraint in a residential care service should reflect any relevant legislation, codes of practice and professional standards. Legal advice on some issues may be appropriate.

Please ask the ILC staff or other care staff relevant to your situation for more information. They can advise on the use of least restrictive forms of restraint and/or alternatives to restraints.

More Details
If more support is required a shoulder harness can be looped through the
chair belt and attached to the rear of the chair.
