Short Description
This guide has been developed to assist people in their selection of a suitable can opener. People may find it difficult to open cans for a variety of reasons including reduced muscle strength, painful and/or swollen
joints, use of one arm/hand only or reduced strength in both arms. Canned food is only convenient if the cans are easy to open.

More Details
Points to consider when buying a can opener:
- is a manual or electric can opener preferred?
- amount of strength required to initially pierce the can
- if selecting a manual opener, is a side or top turning easier to use?
- is it suitable for right and/or left handed use?
- can it be used one handed?
- how easy is it to operate and what hand movements are required?
- comfort of handle
- are components easily removed for cleaning?
- rust resistance
- conditions and length of guarantee

Commonly found features: (Manual)
- can be wall mounted
- magnet to hold lid
- spring operated mechanism to pierce lid

Commonly found features: (Electric)
- knife and scissor sharpener
- push-button height adjustment for cans of all sizes
- automatic cut-off when can is completely cut
- weighted base for increased stability

Suggestions for those who experience pain, weakness or stiffness of hands:
- an electric can opener requires a whole hand action rather than individual finger movements, but may not hold a heavy can without assistance.
- a large twisting key on a conventional can opener will be easier to
operate than a small one.
- a manual can opener with a turning handle requiring whole arm operation may be easier to use than a twisting type handle.
