Short Description
Graduated Compression Stockings are special stockings used in the prevention of venous thromboembolism. They are designed for use under the direction of a medical practitioner. Various compression strengths, and a range of brands are available. All clients requiring graduated compression stockings should be assessed, and the stockings measured and fitted appropriately.

More Details
Class I prophylactic graduated compression stockings (e.g. travel stocking/socks, for use prior to flying) can be purchased without a prescription from a medical practitioner.

Class 2 and above graduated compression stockings for other medical reasons, (e.g. venous disease or lymphoedema), require a prescription from a medical practitioner stating
the amount of compression (e.g.Class 2, 25-30mmHg)
the type of stocking (e.g. knee or thigh length).

Some pharmacies in the ACT specialise in the measuring and correct fitting, and issuing of graduated compression stockings.
