Short Description
Regulation of water temperature is a concern for people who may experience difficulty setting and responding to changes in temperature variation, particularly when bathing. Several water temperature control devices are available to overcome this problem.
Factors to Consider
Points to Consider when Selecting a Water Temperature Controlling Device:
Cost and ease of installation. All devices should be installed by an accredited plumber.
Compatibility with water pressure system. Models are available for use with mains pressure or gravity fed hot water systems.
Ease of grasping controls. Lever controls may be easier to use.
Ease of adjusting controls. Consider other users within the household.
Ease of maintenance.
Consider the use of a safety stop button. When a maximum temperature setting is selected, a user must push a safety stop button while simultaneously turning the temperature control to increase the temperature above the set temperature.
Consider if a device can control one or multiple water outlets., eg. one device may be used to control the temperature of a bath, shower, and basin.
Consider use of an electronically programmable hot water system that provides hot water at a set temperature to the whole house. Temperature is set via two remote controls with digital displays.
Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV's):
Designed to control the maximum temperature of blended water. The selected temperature is maintained regardless of variations in water pressure and temperature.
A TMV is fail safe. If the hot water flow suddenly alters the user will experience cooler water or if the cold water suddenly fails the water flow will shut down.
TMV's accurately control the set temperature of blended water to within variation of plus or minus 0.10 Celsius.
May be set to a maximum of 460 Celsius and can be serviced and reset to a safe operating temperature by a qualified plumber.
A TMV must be installed a maximum distance of six metres away from the point of water flow, eg. shower or bath.
TMV's may be installed as exposed units or may be concealed behind the wall. Exposed TMV's feature volume control and temperature control dials.
Consider if the TMV has a lock shield to prevent access to the temperature setting. This ensures that the TMV is accessible only to a plumber for servicing requirements.
AS 4032.1 2005 states that the TMV should be serviced every 12 months.
Tempering Valves:
A tempering valve is not failsafe as there may be a delay before it begins working in the event of a sudden increase in hot water temperature.
A tempering valve must be set to limit the maximum temperature of water to 500 Celsius.
There is no restriction on the distance of installation of a tempering valve from the point of water flow.
Individual models are available for mains pressure or gravity fed hot water systems.
Maintenance
