Bathroom Basin

Short Description
Bathroom basins vary in size, shape, and construction materials, all of which affect how easily people can access the basin during use.

Factors to Consider
Points to consider when selecting a Bathroom Basin:
Australian Standards, AS 1428.1-2001, offer guidelines regarding the design and position of bathroom basins in public buildings.
Wheelchair access. The basin can be wall hung or semi recessed into a vanity shelf to allow clearance underneath. Also consider the positioning of the waste outlet.
Material of water pipes. Exposed pipes should be made of PVC or be sufficiently insulated to prevent scalding.
Circulation space. Ensure there is sufficient room around the basin for a wheelchair to be manoeuvred. Water supply pipes and waste outlets should not encroach on the necessary circulation space.
Concealment of pipes within a wall can limit a suitable location of the basin. If necessary, a floor waste outlet may be used if the waste enters the floor outside the required circulation space.
Height of basin. Consider height of users. If the basin is shared by ambulant people and wheelchair users a compromised fixed height may be most suitable or an adjustable height basin may be considered.
Depth of basin. Ensure that users can reach and operate the taps, if necessary from a seated position.
Taps should be easy for users to reach and use. Lever or capstan taps are generally the easiest for people with weakness or pain to operate. Basins can be selected that have two, one, or no tap holes. It is important to consider the tap preference when selecting a basin. For instance a single lever mixer tap requires only one hole in the basin. Basins are also available with tap holes on the side, but most commonly they are located at the rear of the basin. Refer to the Buyers Guide on Taps (Item number 81.51.901) for more information.
Plug. Should be easy to reach and use. The plug may be connected to or be a part of the basin.
Soap recesses. Can be a moulded part of the basin and can be located on one or both sides of the basin. Consider the users ability to reach.
Storage. Consider if a shelf or bench is required. Wall hung basins may have a wide ledge on the side for use as a small shelf while semi recessed basins may offer an extended vanity shelf. If wheelchair access is not required, a basin can be incorporated into a vanity unit that offers storage and concealment of pipes.
Material. Consider ease of cleaning and resistance to staining.
Towel rails. Consider position in relation user's mobility and reach. A basin may incorporate a towel rail.

Maintenance
Refer to the supplier and manufacturer manual for maintenance instructions and safety warnings.
