ILC Reference NO 43:40:014
Item sourced from ILC VIC database

Alber E-Motion Power Assist Wheels

Factors to Consider
The push rims are set just a little further out which may make a difference to someone with a limited range of movement.
Accessing some switches may be challenging when the wheel has stopped with the switch at the lower position on the wheel.
May be appropriate for a user who requires assistance to propel a manual wheelchair but does not want to move into a powered wheelchair.
To propel the chair it is important that the rims are pushed and then released. If the user holds on to the wheels they will stop turning due to the power brakes.
The spokes may not be as strong as normal wheelchair spokes and care should be taken with handling.
Limited camber available with these wheels.
May be useful when going up and down hills and ramps. A light braking action on the push rim will slow down the chair.
This item should be trialled in the user's own environment to ensure maximum safety and independence. Environmental considerations include eg: kerbs, footpaths, tram and railway crossings, street crossings, etc.

Short Description
Power assisted wheels which can replace standard rear wheels on most manual wheelchairs. A small bracket is attached to the wheelchair frame to allow the powered wheels to be secured to the wheelchair. When the wheelchair user applies force to the push rims, the motor engages and assists to propel the wheelchair.

More Details
Features
The power assisted wheels have an electric motor integrated into the wheel hub.
The batteries and wheels are removed without the need for tools.
The batteries form the inner part of each wheel's hub.
The control panel is on the exterior surface of the battery.
The panel includes a battery level indicator and a push button to control the power level.
The e-motion wheels have 3 different power levels.
The sensitivity on the left and right wheels can be adjusted independently.
Although there is a default setting for the device, there is some flexibility in selecting a program suited to individual needs with 10 different programs to choose from.
The manufacturer stresses that the wheelchair must have an anti tip system, or the purchaser needs to purchase the anti tip system that attaches to the e-motion itself.
The wheels weigh approx 10kg each when the battery has been removed.
The on-off is situated in the middle of each wheel.
The switch to select the 'high-low range' is situated about midway between the centre and the outside of the wheel.
NiCad batteries. The charge discharge cycling regime is very important so as to be able to optimise their life.
A folding wheelchair can still be folded with e-motion attached or the wheels may be removed.
An automatic battery charger is supplied and an empty battery can be recharged in two and a half hours.
