Vicair Academy Back System

Factors to Consider
Tetrahedral cells and cover may help reduce shear and improve pressure relief.
The tetrahedral cells shift and resettle with movement of the user.
Punctures will affect individual air cells only.
There are many things to consider when selecting pressure care products including nutrition, skin moisture, level of mobility, age, shear, friction, location of pressure ulcer (if present) and hygiene. Any comments regarding level of pressure care is a suggestion made by suppliers as a guide to assist with selection, and this may differ from brand to brand. When selecting pressure care products it is strongly advised that a comprehensive assessment is undertaken by a health professional to encourage correct product selection and monitoring of product effectiveness.

Short Description
The Vicair Academy Back consists of a shell made of ABS plastic covered with the Academy Back cushion. The cushion is comprised of hundreds of small triangular shaped air filled cells in nine compartments that provide dynamic body support, pressure reduction and a degree of postural support. Each compartment can be adjusted in cell density to mould to the users contours. The back is available in eight sizes and is expandable with an angle adjustable thoracic support. Lateral support is available as an accessory. The cushion comes with a two-way stretch cover. The back is mounted on brackets and can be removed for transportation purposes. The manufacturer states that the back is suitable for users at high risk of developing pressure sores.

More Details
Features
The triangular or tetrahedral shaped air filled cells have a low friction level when in contact with each other and are able to continuously adapt and conform to the bodies contours. This aims to provide a combination of good pressure relief with reduced shearing and a high degree of stability.
User specific requirements can be accommodated by the addition or removal of tetrahedral cells from each of the nine compartments.
The mounting system consists of four arms that hook onto four brackets. This universal system is height adjustable and can be used on most types of wheelchairs.
The angle of the shell can be adjusted between 80 and 117 degrees relative to the back posts of the wheelchair.
The back shell with cushion can be lifted from the brackets for transportation purposes.
The cover is machine washable with a breathable top fabric and two-way stretch.
Lateral supports, utilising the same type of tetrahedral cells as the cushion, are available as optional extras.
