Factors to Consider
Avoid the use of additional covers or padding, between the user and the cushion as this could reduce the cushions effectiveness.
It is important for the user to reposition themselves, or to be repositioned, on a regular basis. This relieves pressure and helps prevent tissue compression and potential pressure ulcer formation.
All cushions must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the cushion material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion. Where bottoming out occurs, even with correct use (eg correct choice and depth of foam), a different product may need to be considered.
Short Description
The Flo-Tech Image Cushion consists of a low profile, moulded foam cushion base with a large gel/polymer sac at the rear providing pressure relief for the ischial and sacral areas. The manufacturer states that the cushion is suitable for use by those with a high or elevated risk of pressure ulcers. The cushion can be used in both chairs and wheelchairs and comes with a mulberry coloured, two-way stretch, polyurethane, water resistant wipe down cover.

Design
The geometrically formed sections on the surface create contouring to position thighs and buttocks comfortably. The raised sides and back help to contain the body, providing postural support.
The foam contains gel to reduce shearing.
The moulded design cradles the body, dissipating weight away from specific pressure points and reducing the risk of pressure sores developing.
Polymer/Gel Sac
This contains a white thixotropic polymer paste, which has a fluid consistency. When sat on, the paste displaces to conform to bony prominences.
The large gel/polymer sac is located in a well at the rear of the cushion.
The Polymer remains in a liquid state at all times and is unaffected by external temperatures.
Sizes
The Flo-Tech Image Cushion comes in three standard sizes: 410mm x 410mmm x 78mm, 430mm 430mm x 78mm, 410 x 460 x 78mm, and 19 non-standard sizes.
Covers
A Platilon (impermeable membrane) liner is fitted as standard on Image cushions
There is a choice of covers available: standard polyurethane water resistant wipe down, Black Smooth, Black Water Resistant Wipe Down and Towelling.
All covers are water resistant, vapour permeable (breathable), have two-way stretch, a handle for carrying and a slip resistant base.
Both the covers and the foam are impregnated with an anti-bacterial agent and are flame retardant.
Cover maintenance
The wipe down cover can be cleaned using a solution of neutral detergent and hot water, applied with a single use wipe cloth or can be laundered at 60° C. the towelling cover can be laundered at 60° C.
Cleaning agents that contain phenols or alcohol should not be used.
Do not tumble dry.
For heavily soiled covers, launder at 71° C with a dilute detergent solution.
The cover should be thoroughly drip dried before being refitted to the cushion.
