Short Description
Plastic or metal urinals may be used in a sitting or lying position and may therefore be useful for people who are unable to easily get out of their bed or wheelchair to urinate. There are specifically designed urinals for males and females. Disposable urinals are also available and provide an alternative for infection control.

More Details
Points to consider when choosing a urinal:
Shape of urinal may determine use by females or males. Female urinals are shaped to seal around perineum and minimise spillage.
Shape of urinal to ensure comfort during use.
Type of material. Metal urinals may be cold on skin.
Ease of cleaning. Is the urinal suitable for an autoclave?
Resistance to staining and fading.
Durability over time.
Resistance to spillage. Is there a lid or a spill proof valve? Has the urinal a flat base for stability after use?
Can the urinal be comfortably held in place by the user or carer? Consider weight of urinal.
Can the urinal be stored within reach of the person. Is there a hook or basket to hold the urinal next to the bed or wheelchair?
Are there graduated volume markings to measure the quantity of fluid? Are the markings clear to read?
Is the urinal small enough to be discreet and portable?
